Crime scenes shut down Hayden Bridge Road
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Police confronted a suspect in Wednesday's fatal shooting and took the suspect into custody, according to school officials who spoke to police. | BACKGROUND
There was "a confrontation with Springfield Police Department and a suspect from yesterday's incident. Shots were fired in the area, and Page Elementary staff took precautionary action to ensure that students and staff were safe. According to the Springfield Police Department the situation happened and was resolved in less than 60 seconds. A suspect has been apprehended by Springfield Police Department," according to Jeff DeFranco with the Springfield School District.
Investigators are working two crime scenes: the scene of the crash and a second spot a few blocks away, where witnesses say the confrontation started.
It is now unclear from witness accounts whether a shot was fired at the first location or the crash site.
The pickup shows signs of a gunshot through the cab. The back window is shattered.
A portion of Hayden Bridge Road around the scene of the accident and shooting is closed. Police predict it will be closed for several hours to come.
A gunshot wound victim was transported from the scene to RiverBend Hospital at 10:53 a.m.
There is no word yet on the victim's condition.
Police said there is no need for concern about public safety because there is not a suspect on the loose, and nearby Page Elementary School was not in lockdown.
Two police officers were parked in the lot at Northwood Christian Church this morning. No word yet on whether their presence is related to today's incident.
In an urgent press release, Springfield police said "due to a major incident, Hayden Bridge Road is closed" between the 800 and 1200 blocks for the next several hours. | CLOSURE MAP
