EUGENE, Ore. -- The City of Eugene wants to raise parking meter rates near the University of Oregon, the first increase since 1999.

Two administrative orders signed on Aug. 26 by City Manager John Ruiz create a campus parking district around the UO and Northwest Christian University and increase the metered parking rates from 75 cents per hour to $1 per hour.

"The last meter increase was almost a decade ago," said Jeff Petry, the city's parking services manager. "Costs have gone up in the last decade."

The change would generate about $150,000 in new revenue, Petry said.

Monthly parking rates downtown, by comparison, usually go about about $1 per month every two or three years. The cost of a parking ticket increased from $10 to $12.

Meter rates are the next area for the city to consider, Petry said.

"We've kind of held off on the street meters," he said.

Campus Parking District

The proposal also creates the campus parking district distinct form the municipal parking district.

"This creates the flexibility to implement a different set of parking rules," Petry said. This could help the city, university and Fairmount neighborhood manage parking around the new UO parking arena, he said.

The public has 30 days to comment on the plan, or until Sept. 25 or Sept. 26.

Classes resume at the UO on Sept. 29.

Classes resumed at Northwest Christian on Aug. 27.

"The idea was not to implement it during the term," Petry said. "We don't want our customers to get used to one set of parking rules and then change it. It's better to implement it before (the terms starts) than during."

To comment on the plan, you can e-mail Petry at parking@ci.eugene.or.us.

"If people will give me feedback, what I promise is to take the feedback to the city manager and make sure this is the right decision," Petry said.
