Police chief: Checks and balances in place for red light cameras
By KPIC Web StaffROSEBURG, Ore. -- Motorists who receive tickets from red light cameras in Roseburg will be able to review the video footage of their alleged offense online, according to the chief of police. The Roseburg City Council approved a plan to contract with a private company to install and run the cameras. Some citizensa re concerned about that arrangement. Police Chief Mark Nickel said a three-step review process will help protect citizens accused of running a red light. "There's two steps that occur at their headquarters and they make sure that all of the requirements of the state law are in place," Nickel said. "Then they send the video to the police department, and it's reviewed by a police officer. Then they have a certain standard they have to establish before they can accept the violation. And if those standards are met, then the officer responds back to the company and that's when the citation is issued." Nickel said motorists who don't believe they violated the law can view the video online. "They can bring up their video and see the violation they're alleged to have committed," Nickel said. Cameras won't be set up until near the end of the year, and there will be a 30 day grace period before citations are issued. |
