Fire spreads from deck to house

EUGENE, Ore. -- A woman escaped a house fire that spread from a deck to a house in south Eugene, possibly from a propane barbecue in use when the fire broke out.

The woman was not injured.

Fire crews rolled up to the scene around 12:30 p.m. today and went to work battling the blaze. Firefighters climbed onto the roof and removed burning shingles, turning a fire hose on the flames.

District fire chief Don Vaught said the blaze on Courtney Place, off of Crest Drive, began on a rear deck and spread to the house.

A neighbor said a propane barbecue was in use at the time of the fire, but Vaught could not say whether that was the cause of the fire.

Firefighters controlled the blaze in about an hour. Damage estimates are pending.
