David Walker: We often hear about people who say they avoid downtown. As mayor, what do you think would need to happen to make downtown, if you will, work again?
Jim Torrey: Well, I used to be in the radio business, and one of the things you do in the radio business is to find ways to get people to participate in an activity, and frankly one of the things that I talked to the downtown merchants about is the possibility of going to the various media outlets in Eugene and Springfield and asking them to take a week and find exciting things to do downtown.
Another thing that I think would work very well: we have the beautiful trees on either side of Broadway, from Franklin all the way to Lincoln - what would happen if we were to put bright white lightes on all of those trees and they were on all evening and into the middle of the night. And you know kesey plaza? I'd like brand new bright lights so it's as bright during the evening as it is at night, and frankly I wouldn't mind seeing a few windows in those two stores adjacent to it.
Kitty Piercy: Well I'd like to see us all spending time together downtown. That would be my ideal and I know it's a work in progress. It's been a work in progress for all too long, but I'm very optimistic right now because we have the center court renovation that's going to break ground in the spring - not only renovate that building but fill the pit behind with retail and business.
And then we have the mixed use development across from the library. I think with those two plus the two new housing developments that we have with the Tate and WestTown on 8th, I think those will really move us forward to have that more vibrant, active mix on the street that I think everybody wants to - a healthy mix on the street that everybody wants to have happen.
Ultimately, I believe that that's the answer, is that we have to have people enjoying - a variety of people really enjoying being in our downtown and have the kind of downtown that attracts a variety of people.
