LONGVIEW, Wash. -- A Kelso man was sentenced Thursday to more than three years in prison for his role in kidnapping a dog and holding it for ransom.

The Daily News reports 39-year-old Jesse James Clark was convicted last week of extortion and possessing stolen property.

Police say Clark kept an English bulldog named Jagger that was taken from a Woodland yard in October 2011 by two other people.

Jagger's owner, Jennifer Thomas, recieved a text message that said "If you don't do exactly as you're told the next few messages will be of your friend slowly getting tortured to death. And do us both a favor, keep this to yourself, no cops."

The people who took Jagger threatened to kill the dog unless they were given $1,000 and prescription drugs.

Jagger was later found dead near railroad tracks in Kelso with part of his head missing. Clark was arrested a few days later after someone told police they'd seen the dog at his house.

The two other people involved were also arrested.

"This is a felony theft and extortion case," Cowlitz County Sheriff Mark Nelson said at the time. "It just happened to be that the thing that was stolen was a dog; someone's pet and part of her family. And while we're happy to clear the case with these arrests, we're all sorry that Jaggar was not recovered alive."

Ivey Rose Svaleson pleaded guilty last year to extortion and was sentenced to nine months in jail. Her boyfriend, Johnny Lee Jordan, also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to more than three years in prison.
