Mayoral candidates on leadership
By KVAL Web SiteDavid Walker: Describe a situation where the city council was divided and you, as a mayor, helped guide them through that? Jim Torrey: If you remember a few years ago, there was an issue relating to renaming a street that goes right by Autzen Stadium in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., and at that time the council actually voted against doing that. I convinced members of the council to reconsider that at the next meeting and that was a challenge but it was definitely worth doing. We need to respect all elements of our community, regardless of who they are and where they come from and we also need to send a message, not only to our citizens but to the state and the nation that we are an open, welcoming city and I'm very proud of what we were able to do that day at that city council meeting. Kitty Piercy: Well I think one of the issues that I can really talk about, actually there's two that come to my mind, one is when we were dealing with transportation issues and how we were going to deal with our road repair issues. So I asked them to go, four of -- them two from sort of different sides of the council -- go meet and come back with proposals that they all could agree on to move us forward as a community so we would all be on the same page and in fact they did that and they came back with those proposals and that's what we're rolling out in November. |
