ASHLAND, Ore. -- A 15-year-old boy received serious injuries when he crashed a stolen SUV into a parked dump truck and backhoe while attempting to elude police. The vehicle burst into flames while the boy was still in the driver's seat.

Police attempted to stop a 2004 Ford Expedition on Interstate 5 that had been reported stolen by a 15-year-old suspect from Tacoma, Wash. The boy continued to drive north at a high rate of speed, according to officers.

Officers backed off the chase in a construction zone. The driver crashed into a parked dump truck and backhoe on the shoulder of the freeway.

The vehicle caught fire on impact with the driver still in the vehicle. Rescuers extinguished the fire and removed the boy, who was transported to an area hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police did not release the name of the suspect.
