Friend remembers Lee Chabre of Newsradio 1120

EUGENE, Ore. - It has been a tough day at work for this reporter, for I've lost a friend and broadcasting has lost the consummate professional.

KPNW Radio of Eugene and Bicoastal Media announced the passing Tuesday of Lee Chabre, who died after a long battle with cancer.  Lee was 63.   He was Program Director at the station for years and years -- as far as I'm concerned, THE voice of Newsradio 1120.

This is like a death in the family, because it was my deepest privilege to work with Lee during my time at KPNW as News Director.

In 13 years of working alongside a fellow, you get to know him.  Lee was unflappable and cool under pressure.

The big winter storm of 2002 is a classic example ... remember that one?  Power was lost in a wide area of Western Oregon, trees were down, regular phone service was out of the question.   We lost power at the old studios at 13th and Olive and were on the air via back-up generator.  Lights are out in the studio/newsroom and of course, we can't find a working flashlight.  No problem: Lee decides to park all available vehicles in the parking lot, point them toward the window with lights on, and away we go -- broadcasting by headlights.

It was beautiful, and a pure Lee moment.  That's what I'll remember, the laughs and the good memories.  All of us at KVAL extend our sympathies to the KPNW staff and most of all to Lee's family at this awful time.  He was quite simply, the best.
