Police shoot murder suspect after south Eugene standoff
Members of the SWAT team deploy Sunday to a home where they hoped to find the suspect in a shooting Saturday. The incident ended with the suspect injured by gunshots fired by police after he refused to drop two large knives. By Molly Blancett KVAL News and KVAL.com Web StaffEUGENE, Ore. - Following a standoff in south Eugene, police on Sunday shot a homicide suspect.
"They gave him commands in both English and Spanish so that we could make a safe arrest," said Interim Eugene Police Chief Pete Kearns. "He shook his head no and returned into the house." Soon after, police said Aleman walked out again - this time with two large knives. Officers said at that point they couldn't let him go back into the home because they feared for the safety of a woman and two young kids inside. Police shot him with a sponge round, a rifle, and, after he still did not drop the knives, they used a stun gun to finally subdue him and get him to a hospital. Aleman was taken to RiverBend Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday. The extent of his injuries was not immediately clear. Police have linked Aleman to a double shooting Saturday night that killed one man and injured another outside a home in the 2700 block of Morse Street in West Eugene. Police declined to release the names of the victims, pending notification of relatives who live in Mexico. Following the end of the standoff, East Amazon remained closed between 37th Avenue and Potter while police investigated the shooting. Police got ready at nearby school
"It freaked me out seeing guys in fatigues running around," said Holly Burton. People were out on the street using the sidewalks and the nearby bark dust running path right up until shots were fired. "A SWAT guy yelled at us telling us we needed to get back in our houses right away," said Bruce Burbank. Parishioners were asked to stay inside at a nearby church.
"The SWAT team and the crisis negotiation team as well as the people who were at the command post had access to a lot of information and based on that information, they made the best plans that they could," said Melinda Kletzok with the Eugene Police Department. |

Eugene police said 32-year-old Juan Carlos Aleman walked out of his home near the corner of East Amazon Drive and Potter Street shortly after noon and was confronted by SWAT Team members.
An hour before the shooting, officers began arriving one by one to the command post at Parker Elementary School. Guns drawn, they hiked across the field to the suspect's house.
