EUGENE, Ore. -- A driver abandoned a green GMC Yukon and fled on foot after hitting a mother pushing a child in a stroller. A police dog and officers are hunting for the suspect now.

The Yukon struck Maricel Teague, 38, who was pushing her 2 1/2-year-old daughter in a jogging stroller. Their condition is believed to be non-life-threatening, according to police.

Police found the Yukon abandoned against a tree. Witnesses said the driver fled the scene on foot.

Police provided a physical description of the suspect early in the investigation. Police also asked the public for help locating a Sam Dye, who investigators named as a suspect in the case.

Police closed down traffic to investigate the accident while simultaneously mounting a hunt for the suspect. A police dog from neighboring Springfield, Ore., joined the hunt for the driver in the neighborhoods along River Road.

Police also faced challenges when the computer-assisted dispatch system lost power along with the Lane County Services Building. Police and fire units relied on the 911 telephone system and radios to coordinate efforts.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9, 140 to 150 pounds, with dark red or brown hair, last seen running northbound on River Road wearing jeans, a dark shirt and a green baseball hat.

Second accident disrupts traffic

At the same time, a second, unrelated crash slowed traffic on westbound Belt Line Road.

At 4:23 p.m. a Prius with a female driver was traveling westbound in the fast lane of Belt Line Road, near the Delta Highway offramp, when a Ford Taurus with a male driver struck the Prius from behind.  The woman was transported to an area hospital with apparently non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicles have now been removed from the roadway and traffic is clearing.
