Students propose ban on smoking at Oregon State
By Laura Rillos KVAL News and KVAL Web StaffCORVALLIS, Ore. -- A student proposal would ban smoking on the Oregon State University campus. The Student Health Advisory Board submitted the plan to the OSU adminitration along with the results of a survey of 720 students, faculty and staff. The survey found 73 percent support the idea of expanding restrictions on where people can smoke. Right now, smoking is banned inside buildings and within ten feet of an entrance. The proposal would extend the ban across the entire campus. There is no set timeframe for a decision. Opinions on the OSU campus varied. "Yeah, it'd be good," said Kevin Harada, an OSU graduate student. "It's never fun walking out of a building trying to hold your breath and all." "I think taking away people's liberties probably isn't a real good idea if they aren't hurting anybody," said Sher Fenn, an OSU employee. "I would support it, as long as there were designated smoking areas on campus," said Kara Nelson, an OSU sophomore. "I think that would be fine. but I would be against a total campus smoking ban."
