PORTLAND, Ore. - Cars and trucks are moving at the speed limit on many highways and main surface streets running through the Portland area, but is still tough sledding on many residential streets.

Deep ruts in the deep snow, which is melting slowly, are guiding many drivers into other cars or getting them stuck. The problem is especially tough for lower-profile cars.

City crews don't plow side streets, so drivers have been left to their own devices, which usually means a shovel and chains.

The problem becomes especially dangerous when two cars meet each other and have to pass by.

Leaving the rutted road guides has left many drivers stranded or unintentionally heading towards parked cars, no matter how the steering wheel is turned.

Heavy rain due in with the next storm could add another variable: deep standing water. Residents can to help reduce standing water in the streets by clearing a path to storm drains outside their homes.

City officials are also asking that drivers who have left behind parked or stranded cars retrieve them as soon as possible or face possible towing. They said the cars are interfering with plowing and other snow-clearing activities.
