EUGENE, Ore. - You might think hitting the gym the day after Christmas doesn't sound like fun.

Don't tell that to the people at Oakway Fitness in Eugene.

"We opened at 5 a.m. and it's two dozen people waiting to get in the door," shift supervisor Ryan Cullen said. "Everybody's hitting it twice as hard, trying to make up for the extra cookies they've been eating the past week or so."

But you don't have to be a diehard. Fitness centers are used to folks who struggle to combat winter weight gain. And they have ideas to make things easier.

"We offer a lot of group classes so you're not doing it alone," Cullen said.

He also suggested starting with something low-impact -- like an elliptical machine or exercise ball -- when you first hit the gym after holiday bingeing.

"You're not necessarily going to be able to come right back to the point you were before the holidays," Cullen said. "So work yourself back up so you don't discourage yourself."

To battle the bulge at home, nutritionist Sandi Thompson said you should plan your meals -- and stick to your plan.

"The thing about putting on weight between Thanksgiving and New Year's is there are so many treats," she said. "They're unplanned usually, so you're tempted by having those in front of you."

One easy way Thompson recommended to avoid seductive snacks?

"Give them away, or have a last final party and get all your friends to eat them for you," she said.

Another way Thompson said you can break your holiday habit of mindless munching is to eat a good breakfast.

And for a healthier New Year's celebration, Thompson said you should have a glass of water with each glass of alcohol.
