EUGENE, Ore. -- State police used spikes to puncture and deflate the tires on an SUV whose driver refused to stop during 10 miles of police pursuit following a report of a hit-and-run accident Monday.

Jason Cord Menk, 40, of Seattle, Wash., faces charges of felony attempt to elude, reckless driving, DUII, hit and run causing property damage and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The incident started around 3:30 p.m. with a report of a hit-and-run accident at milepost 189 on Interstate 5 near the 30th Avenue interchange.

Oregon State Police Recruit Trooper Will Ulch spotted the suspect Hyundai SUV northbound near milepost 197 and attempted to stop it.  The driver failed to yield and continued driving northbound at about 55 mph until Trooper Clay Core deployed spike strips near milepost 206. The spike strips deflated the vehicle's tires, and the driver pulled onto the shoulder and stopped.

Troopers arrested Menk, 40.  Subsequent search of the vehicle led troopers to find a concealed firearm and other evidence, according to police.

Menk was booked into the Lane County Jail and then transported to Sacred Heart Hospital for an evaluation.
