EUGENE, Ore. -- A local dairy plans to phase out returnable plastic bottles due to concerns about a chemical in the plastic.

Lochmead Dairy plans to phase out their polycarbonate milk bottles over the next four months due to concerns about Bisphenol A, or BPA. The bottles have been sold at Dari Mart locations with a deposit to promote returning the bottles to retail locations.

The Food and Drug Administration says BPA is safe, but some manufacturers are moving away from using the material due to health concerns held by the public.

In the meantime, the dairy's milk will be available in single-use plastic containers.
