EUGENE, Ore. - Back from break, Jack Barry is still surveying the damage a burglar left behind.

"Obviously we didn't know what was gone until we got back so it was kind of nerve wracking for the rest of the break," said Jack. "They stole mostly electronics and they emptied our change jars which was kind of interesting."

Thieves also stole a laptop and Jack's mandolin. A piece of plywood is all that remains of the backdoor. That's how the thieves got in to steal stuff while the five roommates were gone.

"It's just a constant reminder of what happened," said Jack.

To make matters worse, Jack doesn't have renters insurance. And he isn't alone. Allstate Agency Owner Jane Fruin estimates only 30 percent of students have renters insurance. She advised burglary victims to first check with their parents to see if you they are still covered under their homeowners insurance.

Fruin told KVAL News having renters insurance is important for two reasons. First, renters insurnance covers all personal items even if they are stolen from your car. And second renters insurance includes liability insurance. Fruin said the average cost for a student is from $100-150 a year. That number depends on your age, your insurance score, where you live and what you own.
