WASHINGTON (AP) - Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley has won a place on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

Merkley, a Portland Democrat who was sworn in Tuesday as the state's newest senator, has made combating global warming a key priority. He participated in a forum Wednesday stressing the importance of investing in "green" technology to spur economic growth.

Merkley's spokeswoman said his other committee assignments have not been completed.
