Bomb squad available for public presentations
The bomb squad responds to reports of threats and suspicious devices. This is a press release courtesy of the Eugene Police Department In the wake of recent bomb threats at two local schools and a church, the Metro Explosive Disposal Unit is offering educational, group presentations upon request to provide answers to questions people may have about these types of incidents, the response to them, and what prevention measures the public can take to increase their safety. Those interested in a presentation are asked to leave a message for Sergeant Kris Martes at 682.5154, extension 1463 or e-mail her at kris.m.martes@ci.eugene.or.us About MEDU The Metro Explosive Disposal Unit (MEDU), casually referred to as the “bomb squad,” is an ad hoc team of several officers and a sergeant. All of the team’s members have full-time duties in regular units, but also are on call 24 hours a day to respond to reports of possible explosive devices. EDU is called out more than 100 times a year for a variety of reasons, ranging from suspicious packages to live military ordnance to other explosive devices. Possible bombs must always be taken seriously, even though in many cases the suspicious item is not a real explosive device. Members of the team have undertaken extensive training on safe handling of explosive devices, including completion of bomb technician training at the FBI’s Hazardous Devices School. In an average year in the United States, dozens of people are killed and hundreds are injured by explosives (not including major incidents) — and most of these incidents occur in residential areas. Anyone who finds a known or apparent explosive device should immediately call 9-1-1 rather than attempting to handle it themselves. Even small devices or stable-looking commercial explosives can be unpredictably deadly, and should not be touched or moved. Patrol officers will be dispatched first; then, if the situation warrants, EDU officers will respond to render the device safe. |
