But are these companies hiring now?

PeaceHealth Oregon
Lane County's largest employer definitely has the "help wanted" sign posted on their Web site, listing over 160 openings for nurses, nursing assistants, doctors and even some office workers.

University of Oregon
Provost Jim Bean warned of more budget cuts and cautioned hiring may be on hold for now. However there are plenty of job postings and faculty hiring to keep up with student growth.

Eugene School District
The Eugene School District is also bracing for state cuts during the recession, but the district still has job openings right now.

Monaco Coach
The biggest dog in the local RV manufacturing sector extended an employee furlough and is not hiring.

Schools, city, state, county and feds
The next five on the list -- the state, city, federal government, Springfield schools and county -- all rely on tax revenues, which rely on payroll and property taxes.

Those sources are shrinking.

Most governments are only hiring for critical positions.

Country Coach
Without financing, this Junction City RV manufacturer will close shop and lay off more than a thousand employees.

Number 11 on the July 2008 list -- Hynix Semiconductor -- is no longer on the list after ceasing operations and laying off more than 1,100 people.

Exact employee numbers are not available for all companies because federal law prevents the employment office from giving out those number. Employee numbers include full and part-time, plus contract workers, so the comparisons aren't all apples-to-apples.
