No significant damage found on stretch of I-5 closed by flooding

By KATU Staff & News ServicesCHEHALIS, Wash. — As floodwaters drop, state transportation workers are checking out the condition of Interstate 5 at Chehalis to decide when it will reopen. "We're not seeing any areas of significant damage," said state transportation spokesman Chris Christopher. The freeway, which has been closed since Wednesday evening, is currently shut down between Grand Mound north of Centralia to 11 miles south of Chehalis. State transportation officials have said the highway could remain closed through the weekend, but that could change based on conditions. Abbi Russell, a state transportation spokeswoman, said Friday morning there was still water over the freeway near the Chehalis-Centralia Airport. It was coming from a creek that is a tributary of the Chehalis River, she said. Crews on Friday planned to check on water levels both on the freeway and at the Airport Road dike. "There's still a lot of water behind the dike that's putting a lot of pressure on it," she said. "We are concerned about public safety ... and we want to make sure that dike will hold." The National Weather Service says the Chehalis River crested Thursday night at Chehalis, 7 feet above flood stage. It should fall below flood stage early Saturday morning. The following shows the NWS forecast of the timeline for the water to recede.
The Transportation Department says I-5 through Chehalis is used by about 10,000 trucks a day, and closing the freeway costs shippers about $4 million a day. There was no detour around the closure as of Friday morning. Most major mountain passes were also closed due to weather conditions - so drivers trying to get to Seattle from southeastern Washington routes were also out of luck. However, state transportation officials planned to reopen Interstate 90 through Snoqualmie Pass by Friday afternoon. Road crews worked around the clock to remove snow and debris and redirect water into ditches. Highway 2 through Stevens Pass reopened Thursday after a two-day closure caused by heavy snow and avalanche danger. Traction tires were advised. The department says Highway 12 through White Pass is not a viable east-west route due to flooding at Randle and a washout near Glenoma. But local traffic is allowed on parts of the highway that had been closed. - The Associated Press contributed to this report |
