BANDON, Ore. -- A 74-year-old man died when he drove across Highway 101 and off the road into a tree on Saturday.

David Lawrence Allen of Langlois, Ore., died at the hospital after the crash.

Investigators said Allen was northbound on Hwy 101 when he drove his 2005 Jeep across the center line, through the southbound lane and off the road, where his vehicle crashed into a tree.

Allen's passenger, Richard Anthony Standiford, 45, of Langlois, Ore., was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both were using safety restraints and both airbags deployed.

OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Coos County Medical Examiner's Office.

Bandon Fire Department, Bay Cities Ambulance, and the ODOT assisted at the scene.

Highway 101 was restricted to one lane of traffic, controlled by flaggers, for about 3 hours.
