Tank crashes into pickup, kills driver
FORT LEWIS, Wash. -- Investigators say a Fort Lewis soldier is to blame for the crash that killed a man on Tuesday afternoon.

State troopers said the accident happened on Highway 507 and 8th Avenue South at 4:20 p.m.

The Stryker tank was stopped at a stop sign on 8th, waiting to make a left turn onto Hwy 507 and head south.

While making the left turn, the tank crashed into a civilian pickup truck, which was headed north on Hwy 507.

The driver of the pickup, Gregory Wood, 55, of Roy, was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the four passengers in the Stryker vehicle were hurt.

The Army vehicle belongs to the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.

The soldier may face failure to yield charges, troopers said.

Fort Lewis officials are aiding in the investigation.

Highway 507 runs through the Fort Lewis Army Base and is open to both military and civilian traffic.
