MERLIN, Ore. -- A 40-year-old man died Monday night when he was hit by a vehicle on Interstate 5 in southern Oregon. Investigators are looking for the vehicle and driver involved.

At about 9:16 p.m. Monday, the Oregon State Police Southern Command Center dispatch received simultaneous reports of a man in the southbound lanes of I-5 near milepost 61.

The first report was of a man jumping into traffic near the Merlin Interchange.

The second report was of a man down in the roadway at that same location.

OSP troopers from Grants Pass found Thomas William Pierce, 40, of Grants Pass, Ore., dead in the roadway from apparent injuries. Investigators think he died after being hit by at least one motor vehicle.

People in two separate vehicles reported swerving to avoid the victim but did not strike him. Troopers are continuing the investigation into who struck him.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at (541) 776-6111.
