CRESWELL, Ore.-- When a violent tornado swept through town in December 1999, it left local downtown businesses ravaged with car windows smashed in by the force of the beast.

Things you should know:

Even though the Creswell Tornado hit in December,

  • July and August are the most common months for such extreme weather
  • A majority of the violent twisters occur between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.

What you can do:

To stay safe in the upcoming tornado season, make sure to tune into your local media. If Eugene is under the threat of severe weather, KVAL will have the news.

  • Initiate your family's emergency plan, discussing safety techniques you can employ in the event of a tornado.
  • Designate a safe spot so you know where to meet.
  • Move to an interior small room or hallway to stay safe until the tornado passes
  • Avoid lurking around exterior walls or areas containing glass.
