EUGENE, Ore. -- Crime is down nationwide, but not in Eugene, according to the FBI.

"Eugene saw increases in every crime category," the FBI said Monday in a press release.

The finding was based on preliminary crime reports from January through December of 2008. Over 12,750 law enforcement agencies nationwide report the data, called Uniform Crime Reporting statistics, to the FBI.

The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program collects data on murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-threat, and motor vehicle thefts.

Nationally, violent crime was down 2.5 percent; property crimes were down 1.6 percent.

In Oregon, Portland saw a slight increase in the number of murders but decreases in every other crime category.

Eugene posted increases across all categories, according to the FBI.

FBI summaries for Oregon and SW Washington cities:

  • Portland saw a slight increase in the number of murders, but decreases in every other crime category measured.

  • Gresham saw an increase in the numbers of murders, aggravated assaults, and burglaries, but it saw decreases in the rape, robbery, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft categories.
