PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — When Little Debbie went topsy-turvy, 2,000 cases of snack food went to waste. Was that necessary?

A truck with the country girl logo on its side crashed Monday on Oregon 217 near Portland.

It was carrying the namesake cakes and other treats. All remained boxed and sealed. The driver was cited for speeding.

Tennessee manufacturer McKee Foods says the Oregon Department of Transportation was in a hurry to reopen a ramp over Interstate 5, so it unloaded the truck to tip it upright and exposed the snacks to the ground and heavy machinery.

But an agency spokeswoman says the company told its crash-response crew the accident made the cargo unfit even to donate.

An Oregon Food Bank manager raced to salvage the cargo but it was too late. A landfill got it.
