Cross-burning victim: 'This needs to be stopped'
By Molly Blancett KVAL NewsCORVALLIS, Ore. -- It's been more than a month since KVAL News last talked to Isaiah Cavanagh, a 13-year-old boy at the center of an alleged hate crime. Cavanagh said going back to school was rough. His mom said he acted out, a result, she said of the stress caused by the crime. On Saturday, the two met with Benton County officials in Corvallis to talk about hate in Benton County. "This needs to be stopped," said Cavanagh. "It needs to not ever happen." The Benton County Sheriffs Office, the FBI and the Department of Justice are all investigating the burning. Simpson said one thing that could help the investigation is the size of the town. "Small towns tend to talk more," said Simpson. "I think people know who they are," said Oregon Assembly for Black Affairs President Calvin Henry. "And what they need to do is help the law enforcement weed out those who are guilty." While there are no known suspects, Isaiah Cavanagh said there he still has hope because of Saturday's meeting. "This will make a difference," said Cavanagh. "It makes a difference to know that all these people are supporting me." Simpson said the sheriff's office took DNA samples from both Isaiah Cavanagh and his mom, Summer MacLean. She said that is standard procedure because both of them touched the cross before it was taken away. The FBI, the Benton County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Justice will continue their investigation. They are still looking for help from the public. If you have any tips on who might have put the cross in front of the house, call the FBI's Eugene office at (541) 343-5222. |
