EUGENE, Ore. - He's been an administrator and highly successful principal in the Eugene School District.

Now, Oregon school administrators have given him the state's highest award.

Bob Bolden, principal of Sheldon High School, is the Oregon High School Principal of the Year, as awarded by the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators.

Around campus, they call him Dr. Bob.

A curriculum-mapping system and 9th-grade advisory program for incoming freshmen are just two of Bolden's initiatives.

The multicultural center at Sheldon has special meaning. "This is just a welcoming place for folks, you know," Bolden said.

Bolden says the goal is getting kids ready for a global community. "Kids feel that this class had a dramatic impact on their life and I think that's critical," he said.

The word spread on the campus very quickly about Dr. Bob's award.

"You know, you see him walking in the halls talking to someone, it shows that he really cares about us," Shelby Peterson said.

"He seems to have a good mix of hard work and still be able to have fun at the same time," senior Jared Cedarlund said. "That's something rare to see."

Representing the Sheldon faculty, special services teacher Paul Schultz said, "Dr. Bob does reflect his relationship with people.  It's a good personal contact. He's here for us."

Bolden said the award is not validation so much for him, but for all the good work accomplished at Sheldon High School.

He'll get his state award in Seaside later this month. He'll have a chance to go to Washington, D.C., next year for a national awards program for principals.
