The new Lane Transit District (LTD) Gateway Station will open to serve customers beginning Sunday, June 14, with a Grand Opening Celebration to be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Celebration will continue on Monday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. LTD volunteers will be on hand to greet visitors and hand out refreshments and discount coupons for Gateway Mall merchants.
Station visitors may enter to win prize drawings for an iPod Nano; gift cards for iTunes, Cinemark, and Gateway Mall; and LTD Summer Youth Passes and three-month bus passes.
Local radio personalities also will broadcast live from the Gateway Station platform. KDUK 104.7 will be on site on Sunday, June 14, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., and STAR 102.3 will broadcast from 4 p.m.to 6 p.m. on Monday, June 15.
The new transit station is located adjacent to Gateway Street at Gateway Mall in Springfield. The station will attract more than 15,000 customers each month for regular bus service. EmX service will begin at the station in late 2010 when the Gateway EmX Extension opens.
Replacing a 20-year-old facility near Target, the new station provides customers with more central access to Gateway Mall and other Gateway area businesses and neighborhoods. The station features an enhanced pedestrian crossing and a covered walkway to shelter people as they walk between Gateway Mall and the station. Beyond providing better customer service, the new station lowers LTD’s operating costs by eliminating the time required to travel through the mall parking lot to the former station location.
The $2 million Gateway Station has been entirely funded by capital discretionary grants through the State of Oregon ConnectOregon Program and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Rowell Brokaw Architects led the design team and Brown Contracting, Inc. managed its construction. Sixteen other companies provided civil engineering, traffic planning, fabrication, painting, landscape, and other design and construction services.
“Gateway Station represents a successful partnership with state, federal, and city government, as well as Gateway Mall, its parent company, General Growth Properties, and the Gateway Mall tenants,” emphasized Mike Eyster, LTD Board president. “LTD believes that the popularity of Gateway Mall and the surrounding area will attract additional customers and that the coming EmX service will better connect people with the community.”
