SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Fewer than 1 in 3 low-income children take advantage of a daily free lunch program during the summer even though the program is open to all children, regardless of their family finances, according to a local food bank.

If more children take part in the summer program, however, the program could expand beyond the current coverage area and reach more children in more rural parts of the county, according to FOOD for Lane County.

For now, children ages 2 to 18 in Eugene, Springfield, Oakridge, the McKenzie River Valley and other parts of Lane County can take advantage of free weekday meals at any of 55 locations throughout the summer.
