EUGENE, Ore - Despite the early morning showers, children spent Father’s Day enjoying the great outdoors with dad. Fathers and their kids gathered at Spencer Butte Park to spend time with each other.

The families hiked through the park and biked in the area. They said it was important to do something dad loved to do on his special day.

In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring Father’s Day as the third Sunday in June. The national holiday became official in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.
