EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service says it won't enforce its ban on gas-powered motors at Waldo Lake, a popular canoe and kayak spot high in the Cascade Range.

The agency and Lane County timber heir Steven Stewart have been struggling for years over the agency's plan to create a semi-primitive, nonmotorized environment at the lake on the eastern edge of the county.

Stewart argues that the state, not the federal government, controls the lake. The matter remains in federal court.

The Forest Service said Monday it would not enforce its 2007 decision, saying that gas motors and float planes will be allowed until further notice.
