GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- A worker who reported a man with a knife stole prescription drugs from an Oregon retirement home now faces charges he fabricated the robbery -- and stole the drugs himself.

On June 16, police in Grants Pass responded to a report of a robbery in progress at Oak Lane Retirement Community, 727 SW Rogue River Avenue.

Michael Wilson, a medical aid at the secure living facility, described a knife-wielding suspect to police and said the man had fled the area before officers arrived with $1,100 worth of prescription drugs Oxycontin, Hydrocodone and Darvocet.

Officers were unable to locate the suspect, and the case was assigned to detectives.

According to police, the investigation indicated there had been no robbery -- at least not as reported. On June 25, police contacted Wilson at the Oak Lane Retirement Community and took him into custody. Police said some of the medications believed to have been taken in the reported robbery were recovered -- from where Wilson lives.

Officers arrested Wilson on suspicion of theft, burglary, possession of a controlled substance and initiating a false police report. They also referred possible charges of criminal mistreatment to the district attorney's office for review.

The investigators thanked the administration of the Oak Lane Retirement Community for their assistance in the investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety at (541) 474-6370.
