50 car pile up near Eugene? OSP says it's a hoax

EUGENE, Ore. -- We've been getting a number of calls and messages from people asking about a Facebook post that reads "I-5 just north of Eugene Oregon this (Saturday) morning, 50 car pile up".

It's a hoax, Oregon State Police said Sunday.

Officials with OSP said their troopers weren't called out to any large-scale car crashes on Interstate 5 north of Eugene on Saturday or Sunday.

The post mimics a legitimate massive snow-related pileup on I-5 that happened near Albany on Friday.

Through the weekend the post garnered thousands of shares on Facebook and spread across the twittersphere.

OSP releases updates when any major event closes a state road. The Oregon Dept. of Transportation website provides details on road closures across the state as well.
