Family gunfight forces sheriff to scramble
By KVAL.com staffSWISSHOME, Ore. -- Family members got into a gunfight in this small town 90 minutes west of Eugene, prompting the sheriff's department to pull deputies off two lower priority calls to respond, according to the Lane County Sheriff's Office.
After being hit with pellets from the shotgun blast, Richards ran into his house. Another family member retrieved a rifle to protect him and others in the residence. Flynn fired more rounds from the shotgun toward the residence, and the armed family member fired at least one round toward Flynn, according to the sheriff's office. Other than the initial gun fire, no one else was hit. Deputies arrived on scene at 10:35 p.m. Flynn then ran into the heavily forested area surrounding the residence and hid for several hours until the sheriff's K-9 tracked -- and bit -- him around 1:06 a.m. Flynn was treated by a Florence Medic unit and then transported to McKenzie Willamette Hospital where he received further treatment. Deputies lodged Flynn at the Lane County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and being an ex-con in possession of a firearm. Richards was transported by private vehicle to Sacred Heart River Bend where he was treated and released for non-serious injuries. The sheriff's office said the investigation is continuing and will be presented to the grand jury through the District Attorney’s Office. |
