PORTLAND, Ore. - Police on Saturday were seeking a self-employed house painter in connection with the homicide of an Eastern Oregon woman who was only discovered dead after her dismembered hand was found in a pond late last month.

Gregory Alvin Cook, 42, of La Grande, is wanted in the death of 51-year-old Shannon McKillop, according to Oregon State Police.

Authorities recovered her hand and other parts of her dismembered body in and near a pond in Elgin, located north of La Grande. The state medical examiner's office identified her through fingerprints; officials believe she had been dead for well under a year. Investigators were not sure whether the slaying happened at the pond or elsewhere.

State police did not say what evidence they believe ties Cook to the crime. He was last seen in the early morning hours of Friday in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Hermiston, state police said. He was wearing white painter pants, slippers, a dark green, multi-colored long sleeve shirt and white undershirt. Though he is a self-employed house painter, investigators do not believe he is working at this time.

Authorities believe he may be somewhere in Eastern Washington, either hitchhiking or getting rides from people unaware that he is wanted. He may also be using public or bus transportation, state police said.

Cook, who is 6 feet 1 inches tall and 160 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, should be considered armed and dangerous, state police said.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call the Union County Sheriff's Office at (541) 963-1017.
