MADRAS, Ore. – A new fire on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation scorched more than 1,100 acres of sage, grass and scrub juniper on the Metolius River arm of Lake Billy Chinook on Monday.

Called the Box Canyon Fire, the fire has grown so large that people as far away as Salem, more than 80 miles away, have noticed the smoke.

Nearly a hundred fires were started by more than 7,400 lightning strikes over the past several days.
