Body of missing swimmer found in Umpqua

NEAR ELKTON, Ore. – Josue Solares’ family recovered his body Thursday after he was swept into rapids on the Umpqua River this past weekend.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies say the family contacted the owner of a water salvage company to recover the body.  They found the 15-year-old Springfield boy in about ten feet of water at the base of the Sawyers Rapids.

Deputies say Solares was swimming above the rapids on Saturday when the current swept him under water.

He was on a fishing trip with friends, his brother Chris told KVAL News.

The Sawyers Rapids are between Elkton and Scottsburg on the Umpqua.  Deputies say it is a very dangerous area for swimming.

In August 2005, 27-year-old Nathan Galata drowned in a near identical situation.
