Woman found dead in Corvallis is first homicide in 5 years

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- A woman found dead in her Corvallis apartment is the city's first homicide in nearly 5 years.

“Based on the injuries of our victim, we know that it’s homicidal,” said Captain Jonathan Sassaman of the Corvallis Police.

The victim is 78-year-old Yvonne Perry. She lived alone in her apartment in north Corvallis.

Police said this is the first major crime investigation in Corvallis since Brook Wilberger’s disappearance in 2004.

Neighbors said she had Parkinson’s disease and used a wheelchair to get around and she had only been living there a few months.

People in Corvallis are shocked at a woman killed in their neighborhood.

“It’s scary to hear about someone getting killed right here where I live,” Shari Bayanovsky said.

Annie Simmonds lives just feet away from the crime scene.

“Just that this would happen, around here, I mean I have always heard this is a safe town,” she said.

Simmonds met Perry at the apartment complex’s laundry facility.

“She was just so sweet," Simmonds said. "When I was talking to her, she was just like a sweet old lady."

Police think Perry was killed Saturday night, and the crime may have been violent.

Sassaman said the suspect or suspects would have had the victim’s blood on them. They are certain someone saw or heard something,

“There is always a piece of the puzzle that is sitting out there and we are going to find that piece. Someone has it, they just have to call,” Captain Sassaman said.
