BAKER CITY, Ore. (AP) — A U.S. Forest Service employee died Thursday while working in Eastern Oregon, but the circumstances are not yet clear.

A spokeswoman for the Baker County Sheriff's Office says the death appears to have been an "accident" and the office has an investigation team en route.

The Baker City Herald reports the unidentified worker had been helping to clean up a marijuana-growing operation discovered southwest of Unity.

Judy Wing, spokeswoman for the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, says officials initially thought there was an accident involving an aircraft, but that's not the case. She says a request for a Lifeflight helicopter was canceled after it was confirmed the person had died.
