EUGENE, Ore. -- Police searched through the night for the man who killed a homeless man in broad daylight in a public near downtown Eugene Tuesday evening.

Police identified the victim as James David Pelfrey, 36. Police are calling his death a homicide.

Anyone with information is urged to call (541) 682-8888.

Police described the suspect as a white male with a medium build and blond hair. He was last seen wearing tan pants and a baseball cap.

Police believe the attack took place in Washington-Jefferson Park. Pelfrey was found bleeding on Jefferson Street, across from the park, around 5 p.m.

Pelfrey is both the third victim of a homicide in Eugene in 2009. All three victims were homeless men.

While police won't say how Pelfrey died, they initially said officers were responding to a stabbing. If Pelfrey was stabbed, he is the second homeless man stabbed in or near downtown Eugene in broad daylight in less than a week. The victim of the earlier attack survived.
