Plane crash injures two near Creswell
By Molly Blancett KVAL NewsNEAR CRESWELL, Ore -- For the third time in less than a month, a plane crashed in Western Oregon. This time, it happened north of Creswell off highway 99 and Dale Kuni Road. "I knew people were inside," said witness Robert Thulander. "I knew they were trapped that they couldn't get out." "I didn't know where it went down at because I was on the other side of my house so I came out around it and saw it upside down in the field," said Thulander. The plane looked mangled, but the two people inside survived minor injuries. Pilot Jeffrey Thomas and his wife Sheryl of Springfield were taken to RiverBend Medical Center for observation. Still, visibly shaken their loved ones surveyed the wreckage. Sheriff deputies said Thomas lost power after taking off from the Creswell Airport. He turned around and tried to land in a field. But the plane flipped over, tail over head and landed upside down. Witnesses said it could have been worse. Less than a month ago Scott Henderson died when his plane crashed in another field north of the Creswell Airport. For the aviation community, it doesn't get any easier. "We were just shook up over Scott Henderson's death, now this," said Jim Cobb, who has a hangar at the Creswell Airport. The neighboring community said they feel like they dodged another bullet. "Thank God this one didn't start a fire because we would have lost our home this time," said Fred Tofts. Captain Bill Thompson said the two crashes are an unfortunate coincidence, a coincidence too close for comfort for Creswell. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating what caused the crash. |
