Armed robber got $2,310 from bank, 30 years prison from judge
EUGENE, Ore. -- Police evacuated an apartment complex and blocked off roads in downtown Eugene last September as SWAT officers in fatigues with assault rifles moved into position to take Larry Rich of Marcola, Ore., into custody.
After a 2 1/2 hour standoff, it was over: the apartment was empty.
Police in Seattle picked up Rich early the next morning as he loitered on the streets.
The incident shows how seriously law enforcement took Rich.
So does the 30-year sentence Rich, 43, will serve for using a firearm while robbing a Eugene bank of $2,310.
This past July, Rich pleaded guilty to using a firearm during a crime of violence in exchange for agreeing to a 30-year term.
The investigation arose from Rich's Sept. 17, 2008, armed robbery of the Polk Street Wells Fargo Bank in Eugene Ore., when he stole $2,310.
Three days later, he was taken into custody in Seattle.
Rich's criminal history includes 1995 federal convictions for armed bank robbery and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence and a 1998 federal conviction for possession of contraband while in federal prison.
Judge Michael R. Hogan sentenced Rich to 26 years for using a firearm during a crime of violence and another 4 years for violating the terms of his earlier release agreement.
