Japanese-American art memorial is dedicated in Eugene.

For thousands of Japanese-American residents, the memories are still vivid...still painful. Today (Monday) was a chance for some closure in Downtown Eugene.

Hundreds gathered outside the Hult Center to dedicate the new Japanese-American Art Memorial.

The project is a memorial to the thousands of Japanese-American citizens locked up in west coast internment camps during World War II.
Camp survivors want to make sure future generations don't forget.

Camp survivor and Eugene resident, Bob Kono, says he hopes the memorial will have great educational benefits. "It's our gift to the city of Eugene and I hope that children benefit from it and future generations will learn from it," says Kono.

Today's dedication comes exactly 65 years to the day when President Franklin Roosevelt signed the order, leading to the establishment of the camps.

The $100,000 project was funded through private donations.
