EUGENE, Ore. -- Six people were sent to the hospital early Sunday morning after a car crash on the Highway 99 overpass, the Eugene Police Department said.

Officials said the crash happened just after midnight when a Mazda sedan collided with a Mitsubishi Galant in the southbound lanes where Highway 99 goes over the railroad tracks.

Emergency crews reported that six people were injured in the crash; officials said some involved had serious injuries.

Police are looking into whether the Mazda's driver, Deanna Gonzales-Cruz, and the driver of the Mitsubishi, Patrick Strautman, were intoxicated at the time of the crash. Charges are pending an investigation from Eugene's major collision investigation team.

Crews closed the southbound lanes for nearly 3 hours while they worked in the area. Traffic was rerouted at the Roosevelt intersection.
