Haze covers Willamette Valley
By Elissa Harrington KVAL NewsCOTTAGE GROVE, Ore - Tuesday's skies looked like an incoming storm. The air was dark and thick; however, instead of water, this cloud was raining ash. "I woke up and all I smelled was smoke," says Cottage Grove resident Shari Starr. Smoke and debris from wildfires are causing the darkened skies. The conditions stretch from Roseburg to the coast. One of the hardest hit areas was Cottage Grove. "My friend who lives up in Dorena - she had to cover her mouth to walk her dog," says Cottage Grove resident Tara Lambert. Starr and Lambert spent most of Tuesday indoors, covering their mouths and marveling at the sudden change in scenery. "Like how the sun was all red and stuff," says Lambert. "And how everyone was staring at it." "If it wasn't for the smoke i think it'd be really hot," adds Starr. "I think the smoke covered some of the sun up." So, is this air quality dangerous? Sally Markos with Lane Regional Air Protection Agency says it is for people who already have respiratory problems. "It's apparent we have a haze and the sun is turning an orange color and it is affecting air quality," says Markos. "We're going to watch the wind directions and this is something we're going to have to keep an eye on for the next few days." While Markos says a good storm is needed to clear this air, residents are forced to wait it out. |
