Chain-reaction crash closes I-5 north at Eugene
Traffic on I-5 north backed up for miles south of the accident.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Two crashes involving nine vehicles blocked Interstate 5 northbound for more than an hour Thursday afternoon, at one point closing all of I-5 northbound and one lane of I-5 southbound.

The crashes caused traffic to back up from I-5 just north of the Willamette River south past the 30th Avenue exit.

Injuries were reported with possible entrapment, and at least three people were taken from the scene by ambulance.

All lanes had re-opened by 3 p.m.

The accidents happened as cars backed up on the I-5 bridge over the Willamette and a truck cresting the bridge didn't have time to react, causing a chain reaction.
