Man killed, four others hurt in Hwy 101 crash
CANNON BEACH, Ore. -- An 83-year old Lake Forest Park, Washington man died and four others were injured Wednesday evening in a two vehicle head-on crash on Highway 101 about one mile north of the Arch Cape tunnel south of Cannon Beach.
Highway 101 was completely re-opened about 12:30 a.m. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation.
According to OSP Sergeant Andrew Merila, on October 14, 2009 at approximately 7:30 p.m. a 1994 Volvo four-door driven by Charles E. Nilson, age 83, from Lake Forest Park, Washington was northbound on a straight stretch of Highway 101 near milepost 35 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup with two occupants.
Nilson was pronounced deceased at the scene. His 79-year old wife Carol Nilson and 53-year old daughter Debra Nilson, who is from Seattle, were transported by ambulance to Seaside Providence Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Chevrolet's driver, Tom Watson, age 64, and his 62-year old wife, Sydnee Watson, both from Walla Walla, Washington, were transported by ambulance to Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Tom Watson was reported to be seriously injured. His wife had non-life threatening injuries.
Safety restraint use is pending confirmation.
