The "season of giving" has arrived early this year for eight Lane County non-profit groups who operate literacy and reading programs for local residents.

Serving on behalf of The Cressey Family Charitable Trust, Wells Fargo gave them grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000. The gifts totaled $52,225.

John Cressey established the general, grant-making private foundation to benefit the Eugene Public Library and other similar community organizations in Eugene and Springfield. Cressey, who died in 2006, was a lifelong resident of Eugene and developed a love of reading at an early age.

Since its creation in 2007, the trust has distributed grants totaling more than $200,000 to several organizations.
